The bareley lit room was cast in shadows by the flickering flames of one dozen candles, two unmoving figures lying in a bed that probably was big enough for at least half as many men as the candles burning. The sun was slowly setting on the horizont, painting the sky in a beautiful image of pink, blue and red.

Faint traces of the millions of stars were already visible on a sky bare of any clouds. It was going to be the night of the new moon. A night he dreaded with all his might. It brought a darkness over the land, his soul, that was even darker than the darkness on any other night. Shivering slightly, he turned his gaze away from the huge windows…

…to feel cold claws touch his bare arm.

“I know you do not like this particular night,” a familiar voice whispered. It wasn’t gentle. It almost never was, but oddly enough, it still gave him comfort. “And still this is no different than all the others.”

“For you it might be that way, mylord, but not for me.” Golden eyes stared at him, unblinking. Smiling slightly, he mumbled, “This night, it is darker and so much colder.”

The clawed hand on his arm tightened. “But it is not anymore.”

“No. Not anymore.”

The toned arm trailed from his arm to his waist and pulled him against the lean body behind him. Cold lips pressed against the point on his neck where his pulse rushed under his skin and he felt teeth – not enough to draw blood – but nevertheless, soon after a soft tongue licked the spot to soothe it. Each time he was kissed, he had to remind himself of the sharp teeth the great dog demon possesed.

Not that Sesshomaru used them on him deliberately, he just tended to forget that they could harm him. Or at least he thought so. Lips touched his bare shoulder, making him shiver at the sensation. This time, it was contentment rather than dread or the cold. A true smile graced his lips now, letting a sigh pass between them. “Spending the night like this, it is almost all right.”

“Good.”

He slipped out of the loose embrace to turn around and lay his head close to the demon’s shoulder. Not touching – Sesshomaru didn't always welcome human contact – but close enough that he could feel him. “Goodnight, Sess,” he whispered. There was no reply, but it wasn’t requiered. Wasn't expected.

He drifted off to sleep knowing that he would be safe that night.

-I-

Golden eyes watched the male human sleep next to him. Black hair against pale skin, a beautiful sight beyond belief, and it was all his. That this beauty before him was human, he manafed to ignore that little fact quite well. He had killed those who had doubted him for bringing that human into his palace, talked behind his back about them or simply treated him wrong.

Yes, he hated human, despised them for being so weak, but this example was almost too beautiful to not be admired. To be worthless. And Anakin wasn’t helpless either, not fully anyway, because of the strange crystal he was wearing on a chain around is neck. Somehow, it was able to absorb any kind of demonic energy, meaning, it could not harm him in any way. Still he could have snapped his neck easily.

Why he did not was beyond him. *You cared for him, from the moment you laid eyes on him*, that little, evil voice in the back of his head mocked him.

And maybe, just maybe, the voice was right. To a certain degree, of course. He had manners and he was nice to look at. That is like splitting hairs, and you know it. He growled low in his throat. Damn that thing human called conscience! He was the Lord of the Western Lands damn it, he should not be bothered with such trivial things.

Next to the bed, a dark head shot up, even darker eyes watching him curious. He had almost forgotten that that dog was there at all. “Not you,” he said quietly, causing the dog to tilt his head a bit to the side, still eyeing him warily. He resisted the urge to roll his eyes at the feeble creature. “And not him as well.”, he gave in eventually, eyeing the creature sharing his bed. If someone ever would find out he spoke to a dog... he did not even wish to think about that.

However, at least that seemed to please him, because the dog gave a tiny whimper before the head once again vanished from his sight. Sometimes that dog was a pain in the neck, annoying him like hell, but Anakin loved him and Rin did as well, so he put up with it. See?, that voice spoke up again, that’s means you really, really care.

Pha. Ridiculous. He did not groan in annoyance. It would not suit the Lord of the Western Lands, not at all. It was all about control and that the yukai had plenty. Anakin called him a ‘control freak’ at times, even though he himself could not tell why. He was raised that way. The voice in his head snorted at him, of course not, and this time, it did sound suspiciously like Anakin.

Great.

Instead of thinking on, he let this exact thought pass and let his eyes travel along the upper body of his companion. The blanket ended just over his hip, leaving the pale torso naked. The pale, almost white skin glowed in the sparkling light of the candles. Anakin really was beautiful, inside and out. He brushed a kiss to his temple, an possessive arm came around his waist and he rested his head next to his lover’s.

Outside, the night came crawling slowly over the horizont.

***

Before he knew it, the powerful yukai was asleep as well. He had thought of the day that male mortal he slept next to came into his life and these thoughts shaped his dreams. A blue sky, a few white, puffy clouds, and a meadow where Rin was picking flowers. And just then a dark dog came running out of the forest. He saw him at once, as did the little girl, but since he sensed no danger coming from the feeble creature, he did not say anything hen she went to it.

Rin held out a hand toward him, but the dog looked over to where he was sitting. Only when he gave a tiny nod, the dog touched his nose to the girls hand, let her pet him. He had to say, it was a beautiful dog. White paws and legs and underside, changed into dark grey fur along his back and top of the head. A white, puffy tail wigged from side to side, as Rin patted him, reminding him – odly enough – of the clouds above them.

He was so deep in thoughts, watching the animal so intensely, that he did not even notice that a human had emerged from the same opening the dog had come from. Only when Rin asked a question did he become aware of the human. “Is he your dog?” the little girl asked.

“Yes.”, the male human said in a soft voice, smiling down at the child. “But he is a she and her name is Shadow.”

“Rin is sorry.”, he heard her say to the stranger. “Rin didn’t know.”

“And you would be Rin then, huh.”, he laughed lightly. “Nice meeting you young lady. I am Anakin.”

“Hi.”

The stranger, Anakin, smiled again. “Hi. So what are you doing out here all on your own? Aren’t your parents worried?”

Rin shook her head. “Rin does not have any parents. She lifes with Sesshomaru-sama! But Rin is happy now!”

That was when the stranger turned toward where he was sitting. Bright blue eyes, bluer than the sky above them, focused on him, and even though he could smell his surprise and shock, there was no fear there. At least not to the degree he was used to, coming across a human once in a while. “Your highness,” the human said, bowing.

He simply gave a curt nod, but the huamn didn’t seem to be bothered. He turned back to Rin, who was watching him curious. “Can Rin play with Shadow for a while, please?”

“I really don’t mind. But… maybe you should ask your Lord first, huh?”

The little girl nodded and ran up to him, asking. He gave his permission, not knowing why at all. He was not used to it that the little girl was so open with strangers. Not at all. And she seemed quite happy as well. Maybe that was the reason. Shessomaru ignored it. For now. Rin ran back to where the stranger waited patiently. “My Lord says Rin can play with her.”, she said, beaming, patting the dogs back.

Where the stranger’s eyes were the sky, Rin’s smile was the sun. “Allright then. I am on my way to the next village. I will be back in about an hour or so. Just make sure Shadow does not get to close to the cliffs, okay?”

“Of course. Rin is not allowed to go there either.”

He heard Anakin laugh. “Yeah I thought you wouldn’t be. It’s too dangerous for you. I will see you in a while then.”

Sesshomaru watched as he went down the path after bowing to him again. He heard Rin giggling and the dog barking, the flowers probably forgotten by now, but his whole being, all of his senses, was focused on the human being that walked away from them.

Why was it that this male had not been afraid of him? Did he not care for his life? He shook his head. In the distance, Rin let out a delighted scream but he was not there anymore.

The sky was no longer blue, but a dark, angry black. No sun was not there either. Neither was a moon in any shape or form, or the millions of stars. He still heard Rin and the dog, but he could no longer see them. In their place was a silver haired boy, half lying, half sitting in the grass, staring up at the sky.

He was about four or five, dressed in a red and black kimono, and there were flowers in his little hands. Somehow, that boy was familiar to Sesshomaru. He just could not tell why. A moment later, the flowers fell from his hand as the boy started to scream. He couldn’t hear him, but he knew. Somehow he knew. The scream pierced his entire body. Then, all of the sudden and without warning, a burning dread spread through him like poison.

Something was wrong. Very wrong.

InuYasha.

-I-

Anakin woke up to the yukai tensing behind him. Huh? What was going on now? For a moment he studied him. He looked as if he was… in pain? Yes, Sesshomaru could feel pain just like everybody else, but he didn’t feel it as bad as them. But for him to tense like this, it was something bad. Was it a nightmare? Then again, as far as he knew, demons didn’t dream. Which was a mystery in itself, because yukai didn’t sleep all that often.

Sesshomaru himself had told him so one night.

So what could it be?

No idea what was going on, he glanced to the end of the bed, were Shadow was wide awake now as well. The dog seemed nervous all of a sudden, and just as tense as the yukai lying next to him.

He reached out to touch Sesshomaru’s cheek, careful not to starle him, but he almost yelped in shock when golden eyes suddenly snapped open. He didn’t. Some time ago, he had come to being used to surprises and he was in no danger of his lord. He wouldn’t say that other human were safe from Sesshomaru’s wrath as well, no he wouldn’t go that far, but he was sure of his own fate.

“Sesshomaru?” He frownd. “Are you awake?” No response. Golden eyes simply stared into his, probably not seeing him at all. He was so still, not moving a muscle, or blinking. What the hell?!

And then everything seemed to happen at once.

Sesshomaru snapped out of whatever trance he had been in, grabbing both of his wrist in a one handed, tight grip and sitting them both up in one insanly fast motion that his head was spinning and he suddenly felt dizzy. He winced a bit at the tight grip, but he didn’t struggle. It was better that way. “What? What is it?”

“We must leave. Now.”

“What?! Where to?”

“I do not know right now, but there is something out there…”

Anakin stared at his lover. “So?”

“Something is wrong. The hanyou, he has gotten in trouble.”

“Your brother?”

Sesshomaru let out a threatening growl.

“Okay, okay. Half brother. What happened?”

“I do not know that either. But... somehow, it is threatening to me as well, or I would not have… felt that dread.”

He sighed. “Okay. I’ll get dressed and will be ready in ten minutes.”

Sesshomaru kissed the knuckles of his right hand. “I will inform Jaken of our leave.”

“They won’t come with us?”

“No. It is not safe.”

That he could understand. “All right.”

The moment the silver haired demon was out of the room, he got up. The stars twinkled innocently in the sky, making him aware that this night was the first night of the new moon again. *Oh this is so great*, he thought. But it wouldn’t be like before. He wouldn’t be alone in the dark.

Making his way to the walk-in closed, he put on his black pants and the matching shirt. Putting his hair together in a ponytail, he brushed the loose bangs out of his eyes. Maybe he should cut them again. When he picked up his necklace, the crystal started to glow slightly in his grip. There was something going on here, allright, whatever that *something* was, Sesshomaru was right. He pulled the lather chain over his head and slipped it under his shirt.

Putting on the white kimono he had been given by one of the royal servants some time ago, he left their joint sleeping chambers. Shadow followed. He stopped at his personal chambers – how that sounded, his own personal chambers - to grab his backpack and slip a few knifes and daggers into his belt and boots. Who knew if he wouldn’t need them. Closing the door behind him, he went to the main staircase. It wasn’t wise to let Sesshomaru wait too long.

Nope, not at all.

Just when he arrived downstairs, he heard Sesshomaru and Jaken come his way and he breathed a sigh of relief. He was on time then. The little toad yukai seemed to be worried about something, but what had him stunned, was that the always so focused and alert golden eyes seemed to be very far away.

“We shall leave in a moment,” Sesshomaru acknowledged his presence, then turned back to Jaken. “Take care of Rin.”

“Yes My Lord.” They both kept silent as the might lord left them alone again. The toad turned huge, round eyes on him then. “Be careful, there is something evil out there,” he advised.

Even though Jaken was still wary of him, he treated him with a bit of respect. Which meant he spoke to Anakin in a normal tone rather than the aloof-ish manner he used whenever he spoke of other human beings beside him. “That’s what he said, as well.”

“I... sensed it too. Something very sinister is out there.”

Anakin nodded. “I will keep that in mind. Thank you for your advise.” Under his clothes, the crystal pulsed. “Whatever it is, the crystal reacts to it as well. And I’m not concerned as to *who*ever is out there, but more to whatever.”

“I am as well.”

The black-haired man nodded. “Tonight is the night of the new moon as well,” he shuddered as the thought crossed his mind. Damned be his luck.

“Yes, it is.”

Shadow gave a low growl then, startling them. He was standing infront of the door, ears pulled back, baring his teeth and staring at something only he could see. “Shadow, stop it! There is nothing there,” he said. But the dog’s growl only got more intense. Only when the demon lord returned did he stop. The dog shrinked back, lying on the ground, wimpering pitiful. “Wha...? Shadow?”

“There is a sinister presence lurking just outside the door,” Sesshomaru spoke softly. “All around the palace. He senses it as well.”

“Is it wise to leave them here then?”

Hard, golden eyes stared into his, then, “Jaken will cast a spell on the a part of the Palace. Beside, there are to many witnesses here. You do not have to worry.”

But Jaken does anyway, because you will kill him if something happens to the little girl, he mused to himself. Now he could guess why the little toad seemed so desperate. “If you say so.”, was the only thing he said.
