Only a moment later, the rest of the group had spotted the powerful yukai as well. That was definitely not going well. But then again, when did it ever?!

“Lord Sesshomaru!” he heard the girl in the strange clothing shriek in complete shock. What was her name again?

But had they really not picked up on the presence of a powerful yukai as Sesshomaru? Considering that even said yukai had problems to sort out his senses from time to time because of that… thing, maybe it wasn’t so surprising after all. It took only about a second or two before they seemed to come out of their daze again, because once he blinked, they were all standing, weapon in hand… err, at hand, in case of the young monk.

Whatever.

And that was when he saw it. Or better, him.

The unconscious form of the ever impulsively hanyou he had only met twice before. Seeing him so still, made his heart ache in compassion. Someone like that boy shouldn’t be this… still. Never. But what caught most of his attention, was that the silver hair was now black.

Human don’t have silver hair. And he is human right now, he reminded himself. Try not to forget that. His eyes took in the unmoving figure.

His hair was still as long as when he was in his normal form, only the color was different. His… cute ears were gone completely, and from where he was standing he couldn’t be too sure, but that probably could be said about his claws as well. There seemed to be blood on his clothes. A lot of blood Just then he remembered that staring was rude and he looked away quickly.

Not that anyone noticed, they were still staring at his companion. Sesshomaru didn’t seem to care at all, he just stared back, golden eyes cold and unreadable as ever. It was the female demon slayer who spoke first. “What do you want?!”, she spat at him. There was no real anger behind her words, only a hint of distrust. And a touch of panic or fear. Maybe both.

The yukai ignored her question. “You are even more foolish than I thoght,” he mused quietly and Anakin frowned.

The girl seemed just as confsed by the declaration, then, “What?!”

Once again, he ignored her very presence. “You do not have to try to shield the hanyou from my eyes. I have a very good nose and I do know very well that it is the night InuYasha loses the influence of his demonic heritage.”

And now they eyes widened even more. Didn’t thought that was possible. Anakin was sure he could smell their confusion and fear, mixed with probably a hundred other emotions. Hell, he could tell they were afraid from the way they stood facing the yukai lord. Fear for whom exactly – themselves or the hanyou – he couldn’t say, but he would bet the money he didn’t have on the latter.

“So you came to kill him and get it over with once and for all then?” the miko asked.

“Do you want to insult me, wench?” Sesshomaru stated calmly. “If I desired to do so, I would have done it long ago.”

The monk was moving his mouth but no words came out. Yeah, he knew that feeling.

Instead, the slayer spoke again. Probably for all of them. “You knew?!”

“But…but…” The monk was obviously still trying to get his mouth to work properly, he was sure of it, and it almost made him laugh.

The miko was faster, though. “InuYasha told us no one knew…”

“How could I not know about something like this.” It wasn’t a question.

“So why are you here then?” Ha! Seemed like the monk had gotten his brain back to work. It was about time. “If not for the chance to kill him? Forgive me that I don’t believe you were just ‘in the neighboorhood.’”

“That is not for you to know.”

Okay, now he had to step in, huh. Given the former meetings he had witnessed, this was not going well. Holding up his hand, he stepped next to the yukai. “Uh…sorry, but…um…” Four pairs of eyes focused on him in an instant. Great, he hated that. Being at the center of attention, that was. Uh, yeah.

“Anakin?!”

So at least the slayer had remembered him. “Um, hi,” he mumbled. “Sango was it?” She nodded, mouth slightly hanging open. “Not that it is any of my business, but what happened back at that village?”, he asked. He needed to know.

“So you’ve seen it too.”

“Yes.”

“It’s a long story.”

Sesshomaru stopped him before he could reply. “I suggest you make it short then.”

Sango just glanced at him, but she apparently suspected it was better to obey. Anakin could see it in her eyes. “We weren’t there when it started, but we arrived shortly after. There was… a yukai, slaughtering everyone and anything that moved. I have seen people and yukai kill, but this was… it was brutal. We… InuYasha tried to help them, but he couldn’t. He was too weak.” She swallowed. Hard. “We had to leave when he turned. Else he would have died. We all would have. When… Miroku and I went back after we brought InuYasha here… everyone was dead, no bodys left, only…only a sea of blood.”

There was silence for a long minute. He quickly glanced at Sesshomaru. Okay, so he wouldn’t ask what he wanted to know. Well, he had no such promblems. “You said the yukai was especially brutal.”

Miroku, the monk, nodded. “Yes. I never ever saw something like this. Or that yukai himself. It was like he was… posessed, if that is possible. And while we were back there, a black mist was wavering in the village. But it wasn’t normal, you know. It felt… alive, and evil. Truely evil.”

A black mist? Evil? Oh fuck! “How is he?” he inquired, flicking his hand to where InuYasha was resting.

“He…he will be all right, sooner or later,” the miko said. “When the night is over, you know.”

“When his demonic powers return.”

She nodded again.

“I see.”

“Wait. If you found us, others are going to as well, we should…”

“There is nothing out there,” Sesshomaru told them.

“What do you mean?”

“As I said.”

Anakin nodded. “Yes. It’s too damn silent out there, it’s almost scary,” he said recalling his short walk up to the village, surpressing a shudder. “It’s as if everything is either dead or long gone.”

“Long gone.” After the confused looks he obtained, the yukai kindly added, “It is only the scent of human and yukai blood.” Not that he would ever use the word ‘kindly’ out loud in Sesshomaru’s presence. Not in the same sentence anyway. Nope.

Yukai and human blood, oh right. He had been told this already. On their way here. Still, the others seemed to breath a sigh of relief at the yukai’s words. No wonder there. “Um, do you happen to know what this thing was?”, Kagome asked bravely.

“Not really. But I think we will find out sooner or later.” And I really don’t know which one I’d prefer. Than he could hear a faint bark in the distance, meaning Shadow had found him.

Obviously the small fox yukai had heard the sound as well, because he came out of his hiding place. “Shadow?”

Anakin smiled at him. “Yeah. I suppose he didn’t want to run to that sea of… through the village, so he had to find his way around it. Seemed like he found us.”

“I’ll go find him.”

“No!” Sango stopped the little Kitsune from leaving by lifting him into her arms. “It’s too dangerous.”

“But they said there is noone out there…”

“What about that black mist thing? We have no idea what it is. It’s too dangerous, Shippo.” Ah right, the brat’s name was Shippo, now he remembered. “Shadow will come here in a few minutes anyway, you can greet him then.”

“Oh. Okay.”

If someone said a fox demon couldn’t pout, he’s never met Shippo. He had to bite back a grin. “Stop pouting, Shippo! You look like InuYasha!”, Miroku teased him. So obviously he wasn’t the only one who had noticed.

Now he didn’t seem to like being compared to the hanyou and the pout vanished, replaced by glare. Cute! “I do not!”

“Yes you do. He pouts like that too.”

“I do not… oh forget it!”

Shadow took that minute to come bouncing into the cave, almost running him over in the process. Damn that dog! “Geez! Careful Shadow! You don’t have to bounce on me like that! I wasn’t gone that long you know,” he laughed, trying to get him from bathing him with his tongue. Shippo’s eyes were wide watching the dog, but considering that he had to move past the yukai lord to get to them, he stayed where he was.

Oh, he couldn’t blame the kit. Even fully grown and strong demons feared the Lord of the Western Lands, feared his name, it was no surprise someone as small as Shippo did it as well. Hell, he was sure that even the others were wary in his presence. At the same time, the dog was still whimpering and barking softly, while everyone else was trying to hide their amusement. Shadow enjoyed the attention, of course, only to be silenced by Sesshomaru’s looks.

Only a moment later, the mood changed again. Their faces showed the horror they were feeling. They had probably forgotten Sesshomaru was still there. Oh great. But the yukai ignored their presence alltogether, instead, he was addressed. “I shall look around for a while. You will stay with them until I return.”

He surpressed a sigh. There was no point in arguing. “Of course.”

And he was gone.

His new companions, and the whole cave, seemed to breath a sigh of relief at his departure. Ah well, can't blame them. Sesshomaru was an imposing individual, no question there. But since he was gone, Shippo hurried to come over to greet his dog. For a second, he though Shadow didn’t remember the little yukai, but then he was plastered all over him. Or Shippo over the dog, however you looked at it.

He grinned. Rin did the same thing. Under the eyes of Kagome, Sango and Miroku, he walked closer to the fire and sat down his backpack. It would take a while before the yukai lord would return, at least a few hours, so it was best to make himself comfortable. As best as he could, considering the circumstances. When he sat down next to his bag, the others still had not moved. “What is it?”

Sango was the one to answer. “Why are you here? Really, I mean?”

“Do you really think he explains his actions to me? In detail?”

“Uh… no probably not. But what do you know?”

“I know that something sinister is making its way through this part of the land”, he began, “something more evil than anything else I’ve ever seen or heard of. And whatever it is, it does threaten all of us. That’s why we are here. He wanted to find out what it is.” And I am sure he is doing research right now, but he kept that part to himself.

“InuYasha said he never felt anything that evil before,” Miroku mused out loud. “And I didn’t either. It has to be ancient.”

“Probably yeah,” Sango agreed. “We first thought Naraku was behind this.”

“That crazy son of a bitch?”, he blurted out amused. Well, he never thought about that possibility, but then again, “I doubt it. Yeah he has a lot of power and an even bigger mouth and ego, but to rouse such a force and control it? Nah, I don’t think so. Even that bastard has his limits.”

“That’s what I thought too.”, Miroku told him. They had seated themselves during his speech, and he was glad for that. “But who could have been behind it then? I never even heard abot something like this thing.”

“Maybe noone did. Maybe it just woke up on his own,” Kagome offered. “Who knows.”

He gave her a nod. “Perhaps, yes.” But then the question was why? Why now? Why show up in this time and place? He started to muse over that question since they left the Palace of the West behind them, but he was not closer to an answer. “Honestly, I have no idea.”

“Do you think he will--”

But whatever Sango was going to say was cut off as a faint groan echoed through the cave. Ah so InuYasha was back in the land of the living. Anakin grinned. The boy would get the surprise of his life once he noticed him. Ha! Good thing that Sesshomaru wasn’t there at the moment, or he’d probably would die of a heart attack! Or something along that lines, but anyway.

He watched as InuYasha friends gathered around the now very human hanyou, himself forgotten for the moment. Well, maybe aside from Shippo, who was still cuddling the dog. Outside, he could hear the the wind howling. It almost sounded like a wolf, but that couldn’t be. There was nothing out there, aside from InuYasha’s group, Anakin himself and Sesshomaru.

And only the gods knew where the hell the latter was.

Anakin had no doubt that the yukai cold take care of himself, but he still felt better if he knew what was going on. Still, no arguing with him about that. There was no sense in it. Watching Shippo and Shadow, his thoughts drifted off to Rin and Jaken back at the palace. I hope you are okay, he thought. Please, be okay. There was nothing he could do about it, so he could do nothing but trust Sesshomaru and hope they were safe enough.

“What the fuck!” InuYasha’s yelling brought him back to reality quite quickly, and just like Shippo, he turned to look at where the others sat. “And you actually let him come here?”

“Well, duh.” Kagome shurgged. “What the hell could we have done about it? Say ‘excuse me Sesshomaru but could you keep outside, right of entry by invitation only?’ It’s not like he is going to just wait outside when you tell him to stay the hell out.”

“But… but… What about… I am…”

Kagome and the others seemed to share a look, when the girl spoke again, her voice was a lot quiter than before. “He… I think Sesshomaru already knew… about you turning… um, human you know. He… didn’t seem surprised. Like, at all.” Are you ever surprised by anything, Sesshomaru? Or look that way?, he thought.

Miroku nodded in agreement, having no idea what he was thinking. “And… well, we have a visitor as well.” The monk's cheerfulness was obvious fakte, pointing to where he was sitting. “Two actually, if you count him.” Meaning Shadow. Anakin grinned and waved his hand. Even more though when InuYasha turned his dark eyes toward him.

“You!”

Ah well, so much for the ‘surprise’. “Yep, me. Nice seeing you again, InuYasha,” he said. “I hope you are okay…”

“Of course I am!”

But the groan betrayed his harsh mask when he sat up, or tried to. Only the second attempt was sucessful, and he leaned back against the stony, hard wall. Stubborn son of a bitch. Just like your brother. Those two had no idea how much alike they really were. Um, not that he would ever tell them that. Nah, he liked his life just fine, thank you very much! “I see…”, he murmured instead.

“What the hell are you doing here anyway! Sesshomaru wanna fight again, eh?”

No not really. But he didn’t get to voice his thoughts, because Shippo beat him to it. “Nope. They were following that thing that attacked the village.”, he explained. “The yukai, remember?”

“I am not retarded!”

“Really?! I haven’t noticed yet!”

“Oh you little br--” He was cut off when Shadow stood infront of the little fox, growling and barking as if to protect him. “Wha..? Why you little beast!” But the dog cuntinued to threaten him, ears pressed tightly to his head, bareing his teeth. Shadow almost looked dangerous like this, and when InuYasha seemed to shrink backwards, Anakin almost laughed.

InuYasha turned dark eyes on him. Obviously he didn’t thought it was funny. “Call back your bastard of a dog! He spend far too much time with Sesshomaru!” Anakin just looked at him, not knowing what to say, while the rest burst out laughing.
